Why should I care about the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator?

What is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator?

MBTI, or the Myers-Briggs Type indicator is one of the most popular personality tests in the world today.

The underlying theories were generated by the well known father of analytical psychology, Carl Jung. However, the test was created by Katherine Myers-Briggs and her daughter who took Jung’s theories and developed it into something that anyone can understand and benefit from.

Despite its popularity, it has received a lot of mixed reviews over the years. Some people swear by its accuracy and effectiveness, while others doubt its credibility entirely.

The following are some of the practical uses of MBTI in your personal life:

  • To better understand yourself and those close to you.
  • To help find a career path suitable to your needs and preferences.
  • To better communicate with various types of people.

So…should I care or not?

Well the answer to that question depends on you, and only you. For some, MBTI could be the magical solution that changes your life for the better. For others, it could just complicate things and be a complete waste of time.

I say give the test a try and if it’s helpful then it’s helpful, if not the move on. There is really no harm in trying in my opinion.

My personal experience with MBTI

Note: There will be bias in my words because of how life changing the test was for me personally, but ultimately you should come to your own conclusion about the test.

Personally, my experience with MBTI was life changing. Discovering MBTI completely changed my life for the better and it is a big part of the reason why this blog exists today!

My personality type is INFJ and it is the rarest type that approximately only 1-2% of the world shares. To read more about the INFJ personality type you can check out this article that I wrote a little while back.

It hasn’t even been a full year since I discovered MBTI and figured out my personality type. It was around November last year that I made the discovery and the experience was so significant that a whole lotta tears flowed. Finally everything started to click and my life started to make sense after so many years. Honestly, it was the most relief I had ever felt in my entire life.

The reason why it was so significant was because I always had really bad anxiety issues that I was unable to pinpoint. I felt lost for the majority of my life and couldn’t find a solution to the problem. I was comparing myself too much to other people and it made me a very insecure person. I was always trying to ‘fix’ myself so that I could be like everyone else.

Discovering MBTI let me know that there was nothing wrong with me and that I should be proud to be who I am. It let me know that I am not alone and that there are other people out there who experience the same issues. Since making the discovery I have been a lot better at managing my anxiety and I am gaining more confidence in myself every day (though I still have a long way to go).

So for me MBTI is an indispensable tool. It is a tool that I use to further understand myself as well as those close to me. I honestly don’t know where I would be without it at this point..probably still lost, confused, and anxious..

The Twelfth Sign of the Zodiac – Pisces – February 19 – March 20

Ruler: Neptune  Color: Sea Green Symbol: The Fish Element: Water Quality: Mutable

Pisces are the dreamers of the zodiac. They are sensitive, empathetic, and creative people who possess a vivid imagination.

Pisces are known for their lively inner world. They are true dreamers right down to the core and spend much of their time in their own heads. They are no stranger to wild fantasies and they day dream like nobody’s business. This is why their outer appearance often appears dream-like, or detached. Escapism is common for these people. Pisces have the tendency to escape into their own heads whenever they are fed up with life. This is because they are ruled by the planet Neptune, which is all about illusions and fantasies.

The intuition of a Pisces is one of their greatest assets. They rely on their intuition to avoid unpleasant situations. They get these unexplainable feelings when they know danger is coming. The same feeling may surface when someone is telling a lie, or trying to deceive them. It is extremely difficult to lie to a Pisces so you might as well not even try; they are pretty much walking lie detectors with the ability to see through people.

Pisces, represented by the fish, are a water sign that is in touch with the sensitive and emotional side of themselves. They are very good at hiding this aspect of themselves and are experts at keeping their emotions under wraps. However, keep in mind that these people are indeed sensitive and rarely forget when hurt by someone they care about. Pisces are naturally forgiving and understanding people but they do have a limit. Do not be surprised if they swim away from a relationship or a friendship because someone crossed the line and broke too many of their values.

Pisces are naturally romantic and sensual by nature. They secretly dream of one day finding someone who will love them unconditionally and accept all of their little quirks. When a Pisces falls in love with someone they can get really attached. It can be hard for them to give up on love even in the worst of situations. They seek compromise and will do anything they can to avoid conflict with their loved ones. If a Pisces you are close to displays such qualities then you should hold on to them dearly, you may regret it if they swim away from you because of a lack of appreciation.

Have you seen your natal birth chart before? Your zodiac sign can tell you valuable information about your personality but there is much more to be revealed.

The Eleventh Sign of the Zodiac – Aquarius – January 20 – February 18

AquaRuler: Uranus Color: Light-Blue  Symbol: The Water Bearer  Element: Air  Quality: Fixed

Natural born visionaries – these people are original, independent, and have great leadership qualities.

Aquarius-born seek to change the world according to their own unique vision. These people loath inequality and unfair situations. They can picture an ideal world so clearly in their head and can become depressed or angry when they see blatant injustice within the world. An Aquarius will not blindly discriminate or hold prejudice, instead they will try their best to see all sides of a situation and ensure that there is equality and balance. However, these people can be very stubborn in their ways and their mood can change in the blink of an eye. Try not to freak out if they disappear on you every now and then to go do their own thing because sometimes they simply need to get away from all of the bullshit.

These people need their freedom and loathe feeling restricted. If unwillingly put in a restricting situation they will surely rebel at some point and it will not be pretty. They wish the exact same freedom for everyone else too and just want everyone to find their own path in life. People who only follow the crowd and conform to the standards of society will only get on their nerves. Aquarians are humanitarians at heart but it may not always be clear to people who cannot see beneath the surface. They do care about people but they show it in a weird way that is not obvious for everyone to see.

Those born under the sign of Aquarius like to take a path through life that is out of the ordinary. They will stay true to themselves even if it means being branded an ‘outcast’ or a ‘rebel’. The way they view the world is often far from the norm and they hold pride in that. It will take some time to understand an Aquarius on a deep level because their thinking patterns are so unique. Making friends with an Aquarius can be pretty tough because these people are known for being distant towards those they first meet.

Aquarius-born are prone to shyness and they will likely appear distant to those who first meet them. These people do not express their emotions as readily as others and can come off as cold-hearted to those who barely know them. You really have to get to know an Aquarius before you make judgments about them though because once they open up you will definitely see a different side of them. Do not be afraid of their distant or detached outer appearance and be patient as you interact with them. Eventually you will reach their core and discover the loving and protective side of an Aquarius. An Aquarius holds those close to them very dearly and will do anything to protect them.

The ESTP Personality Type

Logo_1500184279774ESTPs are down to earth, realistic, and spontaneous. They are masters of improvisation and will dive into a new adventure without a second thought if it seems interesting enough. Being the lovers of life that they are, entertainment is often a center focus of their lives. They thrive on action and do not like to sit idle doing nothing with their time. They are thrill seekers to the core and are always up for a challenge. Those with the ESTP personality type will have some eccentric qualities to their personality because their zest for life is really quite out of the ordinary. Even their career choices tend to be out of the ordinary and excitement driven. ESTPs themselves are spontaneous and entertaining people. They can garner the attention of those around them simply by being themselves because of  their natural humor and stylish flair.

The dominant function of the ESTP personality type is Extraverted Sensing (Se). Se is all about the physical environment and what’s going on in the here and now. Any activity that relies on the 5 senses (taste, sight, touch, smell, and hearing) is where ESTPs really thrive. Typically anything new to their senses will be a big source of interest, food for example. ESTPs are also extremely perceptive of the world around them in the current moment. The present moment in general is very important to ESTPs. They do not like to worry too much about the future or the past, rather they like to focus on what’s going on right now.  They like to make the most out of life and want to make each moment fun and exciting. They are very observant of their surroundings and can pick up on little details or changes in the environment that others seem to overlook. Even little changes in facial expressions or slight hand gestures can be easily read and analyzed. ESTPs can be incredibly hard to fool because of this and it gives them the upper hand when it comes to negotiating with people.

Introverted Thinking (Ti) is the auxiliary function of the ESTP personality type. With Ti they are able to understand the world and make sense of it logically. The world to an ESTP is made up of facts that the ESTP recognizes and accepts because they make sense. Ti is especially useful when there is a problem that needs to be solved or a method that needs to be improved. This is a second mode of operation and a more serious side to them compared to their fun loving Se dominant side. ESTPs are the masters of reading a situation and coming up with decisions on the fly but they certainly have the capability to plan as well, though they usually prefer not to. This is actually one of the biggest strengths that they possess because even without a plan they can do just as good, if not better than the next guy.

Extraverted Feeling (Fe) is their tertiary function and one of their weaker abilities but it nonetheless supports them throughout life. This is relevant in understanding how others are feeling. ESTPs in general tend to disregard the feelings of others, however, they often end up naturally developing their fe to a functioning degree at some point in their lives (usually in their mid 30s). Though they seldom rely on feelings in their daily living. ESTPs instead prefer to make decisions that are based on facts and logic rather than feelings.

Introverted Intuition (Ni) is the inferior function of the ESTP personality type. It is basically the opposite of Extraverted Sensing which is all about the present moment and taking action. Ni is about envisioning the future possibilities. This is the weakest ability that they possess and it often manifests itself in a negative manner. They can suffer from internal confusion and lack of motivation if they get stuck using their inferior Ni too much. This is one of the few times that these guys seriously stress themselves out because normally they are very easy going and relaxed.

The functions:

Dominant function: Extraverted Sensing (Se)

Auxiliary function: Introverted Thinking (Ti)

Tertiary function: Extraverted Feeling (Fe)

Inferior function: Introverted Intuition (Ni)

The ISFP Personality Type

Logo_1498850076425ISFPs are modest, sensitive, and adventure loving people who live their life according to their values.

Those who identify with the ISFP personality type will be driven to do things depending on how they feel about them; this is because of their dominant function Introverted Feeling (Fi). Fi is the source of their strong inner value system and it guides their choice of actions throughout life. One thing that ISFPs fear the most is being forced to do something that goes against their values. These people need their independence and are often proud of their own unique style and originality.

ISFPs value harmony in their lives and strive to maintain certain feelings within. These people feel things deeply and are known for being quite sensitive, especially when it comes to conflict or criticism. However, they may not always express the depth of their feelings to the outside world and instead choose to bottle up their feelings on the inside. Artistic expression is a great way for them to show the world how they feel and they often do well in the art industry.

The source of their adventure loving nature is their auxiliary function Extraverted Sensing (Se).  Se is all about the present moment and the utilization of the 5 senses. ISFPs tend to always be aware of what’s going on around them at the moment, even when they are daydreaming or lost in their inner world. Se is also what makes these people unpredictable and spontaneous. ISFPs would rather leave their schedule open than plan their whole life out because that would be much too boring. Although they are introverted and tend to be quiet people, they have a fun loving air about them and are known for taking spontaneous risks.

ISFPs naturally combine Fi and Se. Fi is their default mode of living and it is all about peace and harmony. However, Se is all about action and taking risks which makes for a very unique combination. An ISFP with well developed Se will be great at taking action, especially when it comes to something they feel passionate about. Decision making in general is not a strong point for ISFPs but developing Se will definitely help in that regard. Fi on it’s own is very lax and melancholy so having Se to support creates an equilibrium that is essential for these people to function.

Their tertiary function is Introverted Intuition (Ni). This function is not the strongest of their abilities but it is there to support them nonetheless. With Ni these people can envision possibilities and potential improvements for the future. Their intuition is an important tool for figuring out which path to take in life but it can sometimes leave them idle and stagnant. Sometimes these people get stuck in a Fi + Ni loop which can get quite depressing. They may envision their wildest dreams coming true and how great it will feel when they accomplish their goals but will remain stuck in the loop, simply dreaming but unable to take action. This may feel like a safe place for them but ultimately nothing will change without them taking action in the present and making things happen. The only way for them to get out of the loop is to utilize their auxiliary function Se and start taking action.

The inferior function for the ISFP personality type is Extraverted Thinking (Te). This is their weakest function and very often brings out the negative characteristics of the person. When an ISFP is being bombarded with excessive criticism or negativity then that’s when Te will start to show. They will feel compelled to take control of the situation and defend themselves any way they can. Most often they will become aggressive towards whoever criticized them and will respond with their own criticism. Te will also show its self by taking unnecessary action that only makes the situation worse. Learning how to control their emotions and remain peaceful in times like these is a life long goal for people with the ISFP personality type and it will only get easier with age.

The functions:

Dominant function: Introverted Feeling (Fi)

Auxiliary function: Extraverted Sensing (Se)

Tertiary function: Introverted Intuition (Ni)

Inferior function: Extraverted Thinking (Te)
